  • Rejoice: Thursday is National Pretzel Day. It’s a holiday made for Philadelphia. According to a press release, National Pretzel Day was created in 1983 when Rep. Robert S. Walker determined his favorite food needed a holiday. Twenty years later, Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell joined the bandwagon by re-declaring the unofficial national holiday. And today is the day, everyone. How much do we love pretzels in this region?

According to Wikipedia, “Southeastern Pennsylvania is considered the birthplace of the American pretzel industry. In fact, Pa. produces 80% of the nation’s pretzels and the average Philadelphian consumes about twelve times more pretzels than the national average.”

To celebrate the holiday, the Philly Soft Pretzel Factory is giving away one free pretzel to anyone who walks in the door today. Free pretzels, need we say anything more? To find locations near you, check here.

  • Should Photo ID Be Required to Vote? Tuesday’s Primary Election in Pennsylvania is being used as a test run of the new voter ID law. Before people voted today, they were asked if they had proper identification. If they did not, leaflets were handed out describing the new voter ID law that will go into effect beginning in the November 6th general election. There are now 31 states that require voters to show some form of identification at the polls.
The law is quite simple: it requires Pennsylvanians to show a photo that meets state guidelines each time they vote. But it’s also causing quite an uproar, even beyond Pennsylvania. From NPR:

“The new law is the result of a push mostly by Republicans who claim the measures will prevent election fraud,” writes NPR. “Opponents say the laws are part of a Republican strategy to suppress turnout among scores of eligible voters—particularly young voters, poor voters and African-Americans—who tend to favor Democratic candidates.”

A study by the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, which opposes laws requiring ID, estimates that the new laws could harm 5 million voters who don’t have photo identification, a number larger than the margin of victory in two of the last three presidential elections.
NBC10 caught up with a few voters on Tuesday who don’t see a problem with the new law.
“Somebody else can come in here and say that they’re me and vote,” said James Gray of West Philadelphia. “So it’s good that you have this.”
Weigh in: should proper photo identification be required to vote?

  • How Will You Remember Brian Dawkins? One of the most-loved Eagles of all-time officially announced his retirement Monday, though it appears he’s coming back to Philly for one last hurrah. Brian Dawkins, who played 16 seasons in the NFL (13 with the Eagles and the final three in Denver), is officially hanging it up. It took more than the standard 140 characters, but Dawkins announced it on Twitter:

“@BrianDawkins: The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. • Is Sidney Crosby the Most Hated Athlete in Philadelphia? It’s been an interesting week on the Philly sports front. The Flyers are one game away from sweeping their cross-state rivals from Pittsburgh in what we’ll call an “interesting” series, the Sixers are barely clinging to a playoff spot (as The20’s @GonzoCSN writes), the Phillies are playing too late for many to watch and the Eagles are busy preparing for their just-released 2012 schedule.
But back to Crosby. There’s no debating his incredible talent as one of the best hockey players in the world. But in the past week, he’s gotten under the skin of many Flyers, fans and the NHL by being just a bit of a pain. As so eloquently described by former Flyers defenseman Chris Therien on the Flyers radio broadcast, Crosby was in the middle of — or started — nearly every skirmish that occurred in Game 3.
Today, the front page of the Philadelphia Daily News compares Crosby to the cowardly lion from The Wizard of Oz (to which Crosby responded Wednesday, “I’ve been called worse”).Even the Flyers are handing out shirts to all fans tonight poking fun at Sidney.
So it got us to wondering…has Crosby passed those other guys we as Philadelphia sports fans love to hate? In basketball, that would be Kobe Bryant, in baseball, David Wright, and in football, Tony Romo and Eli Manning. Is Crosby now public enemy No. 1? (If our informal Facebook poll today is any indication, the answer is yes.)

  • Phillies Fan Makes a Jersey Out of 3,500 Drink Tabs. Why buy a jersey when you can just make your own? There are a lot of ways to show your love for the Phillies. But this is a new one. This fan (who remains unnamed but goes by the name “Armored Fan” on user-generated news site Reddit) created a medieval-style jersey made out of 3,500 drink tabs. More from BroBible

“He was inspired by another guy who constructed something similar four years ago. He goes on to say that he made the remarkable jersey while he was on the job during the summer.”

What makes it better? He kept a compilation of photos detailing the entire process on imgur.

Weigh in: what’s the craziest thing you’ve ever done to show your love for a Philly sports team?

  • Philly Celebrates National Foursquare Day. Are you checking in today? The tech-savvy in Philadelphia certainly are. April 16 is National Foursquare Day (you see how they did that? 4 squared equals 16), and Philadelphia is celebrating in its own unique way. National Foursquare Day is when communities plan events or lectures to encourage mass check-in’s on the service. Believe it or not, foursquare spans over 15 million people worldwide, according to January statistics.
Foursquare, for those unfamiliar, is the location-based check-in service that alerts friends to your whereabouts. More than that, they offer specific discounts at certain venues based on your check-in activity (and if you link up your account with your American Express card, even direct discounts to your monthly statement).
To celebrate the big day, the marketing folks at Visit Philly have put together a foursquare list of 16 places around town that involve a “square” (from Washington Square to Squareburger and more). At one of the 16 locations, they will be giving away a prize at 4:16 p.m.
Additionally, the folks at the Social Media Club of Philadelphia along with The20’s @anniemal (among others) have organized “The Philly Foursquare Games,” a Hunger Games-like competition of squarefour, the popular game we all remember from when we were kids. Their event takes place at 7:30 tonight at the Marion Anderson Recreation Center and it is free to attend (though the teams are already set).
Oh, and a quick plug: don’t forget to follow NBC10 on foursquare.

  • Even Hulk Hogan Has Flyers Fever. It’s been a good week for fans of the Orange and Black. And if you watched Sunday’s showdown with the Penguins, Flyers fans know that it was a game full of knockdowns, punches and plenty of goals for the good guys. Well kudos to the Flyers marketing team, who also secured the real Hulk Hogan (see fake Hogan, a Penguins fan, here) to show his Flyers fever. And the team saved it until late in the game to show it on the jumbotron, making fans (and even players on both teams) take note and appropriately go nuts.

    Watcha gonna do, Pittsburgh?

  • Is Claude Giroux Philly’s Best Athlete in 2012? Yes, it’s only April. And yes, the Phillies (despite two masterful performances from Doc Halladay) are off to a bit of a slow start. But since we all have Flyers fever as they battle our cross-state rivals in the first round of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs (how does 3-0 feel, Pittsburgh?), it’s a question worth asking.
The folks at Philadelphia Magazine are conducting a poll for some of their annual “Best of Philly” categories, and one of them is “Best Athlete.” On the list are Giroux, the Philadelphia Union’s Freddy Adu, DeSean Jackson of the Eagles, Evan Turner of the Sixers and Hunter Pence of the Phillies (we hear you, Phillies fans…no sign of Halladay, Cliff Lee or Cole Hamels).
Giroux made all of Philadelphia proud in the 1st period of today’s game by engaging in a little scuffle with one Sidney Crosby (not to mention an assist and a goal today to go along with 28 goals and 65 assists in the regular season, and Friday night’s 3-goal, 3-assist performance in Pittsburgh). But beyond that, it got us to wondering…is Giroux in fact the best Philly athlete in 2012? (note: because the magazine is published in August, the voting closes in May.)
Quick aside: The Hockey News named Giroux the 3rd best player in the NHL back in March (behind Crosby and Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk) and in January, the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association (PSW) named Giroux their pro athlete of the year.

  • Is Flyers vs. Penguins The Best Rivalry in Philly Sports Today? The20’s @GonzoCSN penned an interesting piece over at CSNPhilly Friday, where he essentially calls the Flyers-Penguins rivalry the best in Philadelphia today.

“Sidney Crosby is a brilliant player, a singular talent, which makes him easy to love if you’re from the Burgh and even easier to loathe if you’re not. Pittsburgh fans boo Jaromir Jagr each time he touches the puck, even though there’s a giant mural of him painted on the wall at the CONSOL Energy Center. The two coaches don’t seem to like each other very much, and just to remind everyone of that fact, the Penguins played a video montage before Game 1 that featured the now (in)famous footage of Dan Bylsma and Peter Laviolette screaming at each other and doing their best John Calipari and John Chaney impersonations.”

What other rivalries come close to that?

“If this isn’t the most entertaining rivalry in Philadelphia right now, what is? Hating the Mets never goes out of style, but it’s a touch less enjoyable these days considering New York’s other baseball team is in a state of disrepair. Disliking the Cowboys is a tradition, but there’s something reflexive about it — as though it’s expected of Philadelphia, and so Philadelphians comply. The Giants are natural villains, because of the geographic proximity and the success that makes Eagles fans envious. That has been a great rivalry for a long time.”
