  • Does Chris Brown and Rihanna Working Together Bother You? Chris Brown and Rihanna are back together, at least musically. Two songs featuring the young singers were released on the web late Monday, Brown singing on a remix of Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” and Rihanna on Brown’s “Turn Up the Music.”
The collaborations have received a great deal of attention from the media and from fans. It was at a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009 that Brown attacked his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge and is serving five years of probation. In 2011, a judge eased a restraining order that had required Brown to stay 50 yards away from Rihanna to only 10 yards if they were at a music industry event. Fans are reacting to the new collaborations on both sides of the argument.
From MTV.com reader “KringleChick”:

“Loving both of these songs. Glad they were able to put the music first and let everything else stay behind. Both are great artists and these songs rock. Their voices are amazing together!”

On the other side at MTV.com is LP54, saying:

“Why, Rihanna? Why? I know for lots of people it’s just a song, but for others it’s their role model saying it’s okay.”

Members of The20 also weighed in:

“@anniemal: Rihanna, you’re on your own. Next…” (editor’s note: spelling corrected)
“@cristinmcgrath: I feel a certain way about Rihanna. She used that situation to reinvent herself. I feel like her & Chris back together = a big “FU” to fans.”

What are your thoughts on Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history?

  • Travel & Leisure: Philly Better Than NYC. In the latest and greatest online survey from Travel & Leisure magazine, they asked online readers to rank 35 U.S. Cities on food, people, nightlife, and more. And Philly did pretty well. Among the best categories for Philly:
Historical Sites/Monuments (#1)
Sports-crazed (#1)
Classical music (#2)
Street food (#2)
Hamburgers (#2)
Meanwhile, some where we ranked at the bottom:
Cleanliness (#30)
Safety (#25)
Friendly (#25
Perhaps more impressively, the overall rankings placed Philadelphia ahead of places like New York, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles and more.
The rankings are not perfect or overly scientific, as The20’s @CristinMcGrath confirms but supports.

@CristinMcGrath Wha-wha-what?! Philly beat NYC? Um, I fully expect pigs with wings to emerge from the icy pits of Hell in seconds. http://www.travelandleisure.com/americas-favorite-cities/2011

So let’s just score one for Philly. Take that, New York.

  • The 20 Remembers Steve Jobs. When news broke Wednesday evening of Steve Jobs’ death at age 56, the Internet (including Twitter) blew up. According to Australian social media monitoring agency SR7, the death of Jobs was likely to break Twitter’s current record of 8,868 tweets per second, set when Beyonce announced her pregnancy at the VMA’s. MSNBC compiled a terrific reaction around the web, and locally, The20 reacted with the following:

@christopherwink, quoting a 2010 speech from Jobs: “One of my beliefs, very strongly, is that any democracy depends on a free, healthy press…. Some of these papers — news and editorial gathering organizations — are really important. I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers myself.
@AmyZQuinn: “Last night I told my 10-yo Steve Jobs had died.His response: “Good thing Steve put Tim Cook there to take over.” Why does he even KNOW that?”
@BrianPHickey: “Thank God Twitter didn’t exist when Thomas Edison or Henry Ford died.”
@geekadelphia: “You’ve got to find what you love.” Best. Advice. Ever. We’ll miss you, Steve. http://ow.ly/6OOH8”
@dhm: “So, I think people are making pilgrimages to Apple Stores to honor Steve Jobs.”
@CristinMcGrath: “Apple.com is beautiful. So simplistic. A perfect goodbye.”
@CristinMcGrath: “At 56, Steve Jobs did more than many do in their lifetimes. If I could complete half as much as he did by the time I die, I will be happy.”
@marclamonthill: “RIP Steve Jobs”
@ryanlawrence21: “Yup. Macbook. RT @mattchew03: It’s crazy to think about how many people are sharing the news of Steve Jobs’ death using devices he invented.”
@anniemal: “Thoughts with Steve Jobs’ family. Never easy to let someone who is such a force of life, go.”

If you have 15 minutes today to spend remembering Steve jobs, watch this amazing commencement speech Jobs gave at Stanford University in 2005. Our question to you: what impact did Steve Jobs have on your life?

  • The Philly Gunslinger? Reports first surfaced this weekend from NBC 10 & 610 WIP’s Howard Eskin that the Eagles were interested in signing Brett Favre to back up Michael Vick (assuming they ship Kevin Kolb out of town, as expected). And with this morning’s announcement that the lockout is officially over, the question only grew more attention. Sports Illustrated (@SINow) asked their 307,000+ Twitter followers:

@SINow: The Eagles are said to be interested in Brett Favre. Do you think The Gunslinger will come back to play in his 21st season in the NFL?

To which The20’s @CristinMcGrath replied:

@CristinMcGrath: If Brett Favre comes to Philly, the 3-ring circus will be at capacity. Geriatrics and Felons and Banner, Oh My!

Favre’s agent Bus Cook called the Jackson Clarion-Ledger this morning to clarify the news about their most famous resident, stating matter of factly: “Brett Favre retired in January. He has not talked to any teams, including Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals and the Seattle Seahawks. He has not talked to anyone about playing football. He’s retired, period.”
Would you be for or against the gunslinger coming to Philly?

  • Welcome to the HeatDome. Have you heard it’s pretty hot outside? If you’ve been stuck in your air conditioning this week, you’re missing out on the heat encompassing the entire country in what meteorologists have termed a “Heat Dome.” According to The New York Times, “at least 17 states reached 100 degrees on Wednesday — a result of high pressures compressing and cooking the air.”
This national weather map created by @Sundry tells you all you need to know (in short, don’t even bother consulting your local weather map). Locally, it’s downright balmy, with a high of 98 expected today and then 100 tomorrow.
The20 is all over the heat, weighing in with the following heat-related tweets:

@geekadelphia: It’s hotter than a frakking tylium refinery ship today. #bsg
@CristinMcGrath: Tonight, I start packing…ugh. in my 4000 degree apartment.

How are you beating the heat? Maybe follow the lead of this puppy?

Members of the The20 weighed in with multiple comments, only a sampling of what Philadelphians and celebrities are saying socially about what has been referred to as “The Twitter Trial.”
@CristinMcGrath said:

@AmyZQuinn added:

I think we all learned from OJ that a short deliberation doesn’t always suggest guilty verdict.

And in jest, @meechone tweeted:

  • 17 Shot in Violent Philly Weekend: According to the Inquirer, five people were killed and twelve injured in Philadelphia Saturday and Sunday by gunfire.
The city’s well-document violence problems are nothing new, and Mayor Nutter has often addressed that he is “fed up.” But how do we solve the problem? Darby Borough instituted a curfew Friday, only to see another shooting Sunday evening.
Somebody stop the madness.
