  • Philly Celebrates National Foursquare Day. Are you checking in today? The tech-savvy in Philadelphia certainly are. April 16 is National Foursquare Day (you see how they did that? 4 squared equals 16), and Philadelphia is celebrating in its own unique way. National Foursquare Day is when communities plan events or lectures to encourage mass check-in’s on the service. Believe it or not, foursquare spans over 15 million people worldwide, according to January statistics.
Foursquare, for those unfamiliar, is the location-based check-in service that alerts friends to your whereabouts. More than that, they offer specific discounts at certain venues based on your check-in activity (and if you link up your account with your American Express card, even direct discounts to your monthly statement).
To celebrate the big day, the marketing folks at Visit Philly have put together a foursquare list of 16 places around town that involve a “square” (from Washington Square to Squareburger and more). At one of the 16 locations, they will be giving away a prize at 4:16 p.m.
Additionally, the folks at the Social Media Club of Philadelphia along with The20’s @anniemal (among others) have organized “The Philly Foursquare Games,” a Hunger Games-like competition of squarefour, the popular game we all remember from when we were kids. Their event takes place at 7:30 tonight at the Marion Anderson Recreation Center and it is free to attend (though the teams are already set).
Oh, and a quick plug: don’t forget to follow NBC10 on foursquare.

  • Bethlehem Bashes Foursquare After “Least Romantic City” Rating. We told you Tuesday about social networking site Foursquare ranking Bethlehem, Pa. the second least romantic city in America, based on check-ins to places deemed “romantic” for couples, including French restaurants, wine bars, flower shops and lingerie boutiques. The release happened to coincide with Bethlehem’s “Week of Romance,” drawing multiple complaints from Bethlehem residents. Now the town has decided to take on Foursquare.

To refute Foursquare’s claims, the Downtown Bethlehem Association has released a video mockery of the location-based social networking site, depicting a man trying to propose to his girlfriend during the “Week of Romance” before he is repeatedly interrupted by her act of “checking-in.”

Quick and well-done, Bethlehem. Your move, Foursquare.

  • The Cheesesteak Battle Gets Social. Ask 10 Philadelphians where they get the best steak in town, and you’re likely to get a variety of responses. What’s interesting is that most locals will tell you to skip the corner of 9th and Passyunk (we still love you, Pat’s and Geno’s), and head to lesser-publicized joints like Jim’s, Chink’s and Steve’s. It’s a debate that will probably never end, but local ad agency Neiman Group has added social media to the mix.
Since April 1st, Neiman has been tracking check-in activity (or number of visitors) via location-based social networking app foursquare at all of the local cheesesteak joints. The results aren’t surprising when you see Pat’s, Geno’s, Jim’s and Tony Luke’s atop the list. What is interesting is that they were also tracking whether the visitors were locals or tourists, and that says a lot about (the social) Philadelphians whiz-devouring habits.
Among the data they gathered:
Steve’s Prince of Steaks in NE Philly had the highest percentage of locals based on number of check-ins (appx. 190 of 254 visitors)
Frak’s Steaks and Co. in Manayunk’s check-ins were 90% locals, the highest overall percentage
Less than 20% of the check-ins at Pat’s and Geno’s were from locals
Among the highest rated steaks (according to the avg. Yelp reviews) were Dalessandro’s, Chink’s and Max’s.
Keep in mind that only 1 in 5 Americans with a smart phone accesses check-in based applications like Foursquare (according to Comscore).
