Does Chris Brown and Rihanna Working Together Bother You? Chris Brown and Rihanna are back together, at least musically. Two songs featuring the young singers were released on the web late Monday, Brown singing on a remix of Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake” and Rihanna on Brown’s “Turn Up the Music.”
The collaborations have received a great deal of attention from the media and from fans. It was at a pre-Grammy Awards party in 2009 that Brown attacked his then-girlfriend Rihanna. He pleaded guilty to a felony charge and is serving five years of probation. In 2011, a judge eased a restraining order that had required Brown to stay 50 yards away from Rihanna to only 10 yards if they were at a music industry event. Fans are reacting to the new collaborations on both sides of the argument.
From MTV.com reader “KringleChick”:
“Loving both of these songs. Glad they were able to put the music first and let everything else stay behind. Both are great artists and these songs rock. Their voices are amazing together!”
On the other side at MTV.com is LP54, saying:
“Why, Rihanna? Why? I know for lots of people it’s just a song, but for others it’s their role model saying it’s okay.”
Members of The20 also weighed in:
“@anniemal: Rihanna, you’re on your own. Next…” (editor’s note: spelling corrected)
“@cristinmcgrath: I feel a certain way about Rihanna. She used that situation to reinvent herself. I feel like her & Chris back together = a big “FU” to fans.”
What are your thoughts on Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history?

Whoa. Beavis and Butthead Are Back! From MTV.com: “It’s been almost 14 years since the slackest slackers of a generation, Beavis and Butthead, filled the airwaves with their shenanigans, but when the duo returns to television with new episodes Thursday (at 10 p.m.), the MTV they return to is quite a different one.”
When the duo was last on the air, the TV world was full of music videos (just for reference, the top song/video back in ‘97 was Aqua’s “I’m a Barbie Girl”). But MTV today has a whole new look with their plethora of reality programming, something the show plans to poke fun at. And the other question: can the duo make it in a Youtube and Twitter era when everyone has their chance to be a couch critic? Time.com’s James Poniewozik tells you why they will:
“With MTV, the boys have moved on to reality shows. Are there a thousand other places, on TV and blogs and in your Facebook newsfeed and IM windows, to find people making fun of reality shows? Sure: an entire TV show, H8R, was briefly dedicated to the people who did that.
But it’s still a pleasure to find someone really funny doing it, and as the pair turn on an episode of Teen Mom to watch one of the show’s unemployed babydaddies playing a video game and philosophizing, Butt-Head has not missed a beat: “This guy looks like he might be stupider than us.” When Snooki and Jenni on Jersey Shore make a chalkboard chain of the housemates and their hookups: “If they get this chart long enough, they can find out where herpes began.”
Are you excited for the show’s triumphant return? Why or why not?

Nirvana’s Nevermind, 20 Years Later. Saturday marks the 20-year anniversary (Sept. 24, 1991) of the release of Nevermind by Nirvana, an album that (pardon the cliche) for all intents and purposes changed the musical game. MTV has a great by-the-numbers post around the anniversary to help measure the cultural impact it had. Some of the more fascinating stats:
- 46,521: Number of copies of Nevermind originally shipped to retailers by Geffen Records, which hoped the album would eventually sell 200,000 copies.
- 30 million: Number of copies Nevermind has sold, worldwide.
- 4: Number of nominations “Smells Like Teen Spirit” received at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. It won two, for Best Alternative Video and Best New Artist in a Video.
- 253: Total number of weeks Nevermind spent on the Billboard Top 200.
- $30,000-$50,000: Estimated budget of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video.
What impact did Nevermind have on you?
